Preserving the Past for the Future
This project aimed to engage individuals and the general community in the preservation of and conservation of local historical records.
The project organised two visits to the Durham County Record Office to see how it operates, look at the archives and learn about digitisation. This was attended by 30 volunteers and they learnt how to collect and collate information and the importance of preserving and obtaining documents.
Three road shows were then held in Cotherstone, Winston and Cockfield respectively between September 2012 and July 2013. Each session was attended by 2 archivists from the County Record Office. The road shows were well attended and much of the information brought along by local people was donated to the Record Office. It also enabled members of the community to find out more about local issues through viewing these historical records.
This project is now complete.
