Stained Glass Stories

The project engaged Year 5 children from Green Lane School with the built heritage of their town (Barnard Castle) through an investigative and creative project based around two goals:
a)      the production of a small guide book about the stained glass in the Parish Church and
b)       the creation of a piece of ‘stained glass’ for display in the school.
In the course of the project the children developed their investigative skills in learning about the stained glass windows and their donors, learned about book making, used IT to pass on this information, worked with two professional artists in a design process and brought their ideas to fruition in both the booklet and the stained glass. Throughout, the seed for the project was the 11th century Parish Church and its Victorian stained glass. The booklet is available in church for visitors to use and acts as an aid to enable them to appreciate the church and its built heritage.
