Castle and Scar Top Setting
The programme focussed on the area between the Castle entrance and the grounds of Woodleigh. This was the lost heart of old Barnard Castle and much frequented by local people, but was often missed by visitors. The principal activities were to improve the entrance and viewpoints, enhance the green areas, refurbish street furniture and seating, provide some new seating and activity spaces for people of all ages, and collaborate on plans for improving the play area and mini-golf. After extensive consultation on outline proposals, plans were revised to keep works at a minimum but ensure that Scar Top was refreshed and continued to be a safe place for recreation and enjoyment. The works retained most of the existing features but provided a better and more visible entrance, added a raised natural terrace around Woodleigh with a small seating and outdoor performance space, and allowed for extension and upgrading of the play area, as well as relocation and enhancement of the mini golf.
